Shopping Chapel Street is without parallel Melbourne’s shopping mecca. Around Chapel Street Windsor/Prahran, many cheap boutiques abound.
There are fabulous clothing shops, antique shops, opportunity shops music stores. One of Melbourne’s largest book stores is a 10 minutes walk away – Borders, where one can buy books, music etc. They even have a theatre in the Jam Factory complex where you will find Borders, where you will see the latest movies.
Bridge Road and Swan St Richmond is another fabulous shopping strip, with designer outlets and factory outlets. This is about 10 minutes tram ride from Chapel St. Brunswick Street Brunswick is also hip and cheap for a day tour with all those funky alternate/grunge shops.
Melbourne also has DFO outlets (Direct Factory Outlets) in Essendon and Moorabbin and soon at Southern Cross Station, Spencer St, Melbourne. High St Prahran has lots of groovy bric a brac. Restaurants bars and clubs Belgian Beer Garden is one of Melbourne’s most popular pubs in St Kilda Road, a 5 minute walk from Chapel Street.
Lucky Coq in Chapel Street has great cheap food in a pub. Hoohaa, is very popular amongst backpackers and that is also located in Chapel St, as is Revolver another favourite. Bridie O’Reilly’s has the reputation of a backpacker’s booze paradise, also in Chapel St.
The famous Espy in St Kilda is open to the wee hours, as is the Prince of Wales and Vineyard all in St Kilda which is a 5 minutes walk from Chapel St. Restaurants such as Tusk and Orange offer backpackers a great meal (perhaps not all that cheap but great value) in Chapel Street Windsor. Dangerfeld in Greville Street, Prahran is a groovy hangout. Romeo’s in toorak road is a great pasta joint as is Thank God its Friday and Spaghetti Bar in Chapel Street. Chapel Street has lots of pasta shops fresh and cooked.
Victoria St Richmond is little Vietnam without the little. Restaurant after restaurant of traditional, cheap vietnamese food. Tram direct from Chapel Street.
Acland St St Kilda has lots of cake shops (maybe not so cheap but worth it!) Theatres Astor Theatre is for movie buffs only. It is a grand old picture theatre with give away prices.
